Interview with FYID Designer Darina Boonchu
FYID: Can you start with where you're from, what your family is like, a little background on you?
N: Hi, I'm Nancy! I'm from Thailand, and I live in Bangkok. My family is a big family—I lived with my two uncles, two aunts, my mum, and my cousin. However, now I rent a condo and live with my mum. :)
FYID: What peaked your interest in fashion?
N: I think it's because of my passion in Bohemian style. To be honest, I'm not good, and I'm not interested in all fashions or styles.
FYID: Are you self taught or did you study fashion design?
N: I studied fine and applied arts, but my major is drama. I don't have any formal fashion design skills at all. I know that's not good, but I just really like handmade clothes, and my aunt and my mum can do it.
FYID: How has your work evolved since you began your label?
N: It wasn't so good at first, but now I pay attention to my label significantly more from when I started. I just want people who have an eye for unique clothes to know what makes the ones made by my aunt and mum special. I'm quite sure in the quality of all my items because my aunt and I pay close attention ourselves to the fabric we use.
FYID: What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?
N: I think the most important thing is to pay attention to the ideas with respect to the times.
FYID: What advice would you give to young designers?
N: Well, I think young designers should give some advice for me haha. Okay, but I wanna tell them one thing—please do what you love.
FYID: What would you like to achieve before the end of the year?
N: Hmm, I actually haven't thought about that before, but I hope I can sell more clothes than ever by the end of year haha.
FYID: Can you "define" fashion?
N: Fashion is like a culmination of characteristics of people in the world. We are all different, so that's why fashion has many styles, and it can express who you are. Fashion can show a bit of your identity.
FYID: How would you describe your personal style?
N: I'm an independent woman who loves freedom and peace.
FYID: How do you handle conflict?
N: I'm actually an emotional woman, but I know it's not good for anyone. I'm trying to be patient and a better listener.
FYID: What is your greatest weakness/strength?
N: My weakness is that I can be too emotional, and my strength is that in spite of that, I think I'm a tough woman.
FYID: What is your style ID?
N: A mix of Bohemian, Indian and Japanese styles.
FYID: If your brand were a person, who would they be?
N: Her name is "Keilah Figueiredo," and she lives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
