Riding the Waves: Dreamcast McFly Surfing for the Heights

Thriving. A word that Dreamcast McFly, an Atlanta-born and Miami-based rapper and hip-hop artist has become familiar with. Yet it’s a term that he won’t ever allow in his vocabulary. Instead, Dreamcast prefers dedicated or hardworking. Two words that have become the norm for Dreamcast throughout this whirlwind of a year called 2020. Dreamcast’s release of his brand-new vaporwave, indie-centric single “Cloud Surf,” calls for wavy vibes and good times. Released around Halloween weekend, listeners received a special treat to put in their pumpkin baskets.

“Cloud Surf” holds its ground despite its quick-listen. The 2:11 song packs lyrics of the gold variety and captures the surfer vibe to a tee. Fueled by Dreamcast’s aesthetically pleasing, laid-back, and soulful rap style intertwined with his Bon Iver-inspired vocal techniques, this summer-night single captures a trait not always heard in his music. Unlike his earlier 2020 release, “Big Gurl,” “Cloud Surf” isn’t an anthem but rather an update. Dreamcast provides a quick glance into the thoughts that so-often flowed through his mind. “Cue the lights and the camera/Quiet on the set please/I was always waviest/Hand me the keys to the jetski” This easy-flowing Daft Punk-influenced laid-back track summons Dreamcasts’ indie hip-hop and disco roots.

The song’s meaning differs from the vibe it leaks to the listener. Dreamcast described the song about the “people that I hold dear.” It’s a tune that signifies him as “making music that’s true to me and keeps me pushing the barrier of hip-hop for more.” Dreamcast further details hip-hop’s lack of being linear. He hopes the record reflects this reset in hip-hop music and the potential that the genre still possesses. Like A Tribe Called Quest who redefined the hip-hop scene, Dreamcast hopes to be the future. A simple cause to the problem. His music is the beginning and his persona the answer.

“Cloud Surf” thrusts the limit into acceleration with its innovative vocal guitar solo by Dreamcast himself and the essential hip-hop sounds that sum up various styles of influences into one track. An avid listener of vaporwave music drove Dreamcast to symbolize the underrated genre in his latest single. Here, Dreamcast discovers himself further. He tackles his ability to produce lo-fi beats and generates a heart-warming cause in hopes to create a movement. One that commences his next chapter. A chapter that features Dreamcast making music that he loves and that reflects himself to the fullest.

Current times have been rough on us all, but Dreamcast McFly is looking up. With a marketing plan in place, Dreamcast vies to turn the world of hip-hop upside down and believes his next steps could do that. Dreamcast sees a big, bright, and beautiful world that’s begging for his star. And the world better be ready for it.
